We are explorers!
Humans have been to the Moon and our spacecrafts have explored the solar system. Now is the time to launch a sustainable future beyond Earth.

This journey will be the greatest challenge of our lives, requiring dedication and innovation. Already, many organizations are hard at work on the technology to create this future - but they can not do it alone. This must be a journey for all humanity.

The Journey to Mars and beyond will require us to solve many important challenges, ranging from better rockets, medical advancements and technological innovations. Made of Mars will target two challenges to this journey:

Challenge #1: We must learn to build locally in Space.

Solution: Made of Mars will learn to transform the minerals and materials that we know are on Mars, the Moon and asteroids throughout the solar system into everything that we need to survive and thrive beyond Earth.

Challenge #2: The journey to space must be accessible to everyone.

Solution: Made of Mars will use these Space materials to create common products that can be used today. By design, these products will put the Journey to Mars in your hands - a reminder that everyone can be part of this journey.

Basalt rocks found at the Pathfinder landing site
Decades of orbiters, rovers and meteorite research has taught us about the materials of Mars.

We will start this effort with the most common and widespread of these materials, volcanic basaltic rock.

We can transform basalt rocks into threads and fabrics. From these, Made of Mars will learn to make the things we will need for a future in space.

This effort will require design, engineering and innovation. A Journey that begins today with your support of Made of Mars.

These rewards are created to put the materials of Mars into your hands.

We designed rewards to be useful, ones that might lead to what future explorers will use on Mars. We also wanted them to be mobile and attractive so that you can proudly show off your support for Space Exploration.
The rewards consist of a computer laptop sleeve and two wallet designs that feature volcanic basalt fabric panels. The use of this material will teach us how to work with the materials of Mars and are designed to connect you with the journey to Space.

Basalt will be critical for building on Mars and beyond, but it can also build a better life on Earth now.
Compared to other materials, basalt is more sustainable to produce and recycle. It does not deplete cropland the way that cotton does. It does not use oil, the way that polyester and plastics do. It does not leach chemicals when mined or discarded, the way that metals do. If it is discarded, it will return to the geologic cycle as natural materials should. It can be re-melted and reused, and is created through constant eruptions around the world.

In a future when resources like basalt can be mined from asteroids, basalt products will allow us to have material comforts with minimal environmental impact on Earth. Basalt will provide a pathway beyond Earth while building a more sustainable future here.

This reward entitles you to vote for our next Made of Mars product.
Supporters will become part of the design process as you are consulted during reviews and offered the earliest opportunity to get your hands on the next generation of Made of Mars products.

The Deimos Wallet, named after the smaller of the two moons of Mars, is our folding wallet. It will feature basalt fabric paneling, allowing you to carry a bit of volcano wherever you go while showing your support for Space Exploration.

The final design is still evolving but will feature basalt fabric panels and be optimized for Space style and the materials of Mars exploration.
